Short answer: Stippling melts permanent texture into the polymer frame. It is the most durable option, it cost $125 to $350 at the five shops we checked in October 2026, and it cannot be undone. Grip tape and other stick-on grips cost about $20 to $30, go on at home and peel off. For most people who carry, a stick-on grip is the right first move. Stipple later, once you are sure about the gun.
Disclosure: we make a stick-on grip (Terragrip™ silicone), so we have a side in this. Every price below was read from the seller's own page on October 10, 2026. Where nobody has measured something, we say so.
Stippling is texture melted or cut into the plastic of the frame itself. A gunsmith uses a heated tip or a laser to press a pattern of small craters or lines into the grip area. Many shops reshape the frame at the same time: undercutting the trigger guard, removing finger grooves, or reducing the grip. Nothing is added to the gun. The texture is the frame.
That is its strength and its catch. It will not peel, shift or wear out the way an add-on can. It also cannot be reversed. If the pattern turns out too sharp for your hand or your shirts, or the next owner does not like it, the frame stays that way.
Grip tape is the everyday name for thin adhesive panels cut to the shape of a specific frame. You clean the frame, stick the panels on and press them down. There are three broad kinds:
All three share the property that matters most in this comparison: they come off.

Stippling is priced by how much of the frame gets textured and how much reshaping you add. These are published prices from five shops, read from their own pages on October 10, 2026:
| Shop | Service | Price | Stated turnaround |
|---|---|---|---|
| Americor Manufacturing | Basic laser stippling, grip sides and index points (Glock Gen4 and Gen5) | $125 | Not stated |
| Americor Manufacturing | Mod2 and Mod3 packages (side panels, front strap, backstrap, trigger guard undercut) | $225 and $350 | Not stated |
| Blue Haven Firearms | Handgun stippling | From $130 | 3 to 5 business days after the frame arrives |
| D'Amato Custom Stippling | Frame stipple, Starburst or modR pattern | $150, plus $15 insured return shipping | Not stated |
| WBT Guns | Stippling, under 50% coverage or over 50% coverage | $150 or $300 | About 2 to 4 weeks |
| Triarc Systems | Glock Gen 6 frame texture package | From $279, plus a required trigger guard undercut from $25 | 2 to 4 weeks |
Add shipping and the time the gun is gone. If it is your only carry gun, two to four weeks without the frame is part of the price.
Doing it yourself costs less in dollars. Primer Peak paid $65.99 for the OT Defense StippleTec kit in its June 2025 review. That review is worth reading before you start: the author spent two to three hours per gun, practiced on spare magazine floorplates first, and still had a Glock 48 frame warp from the heat before correcting it. There is no undo.
Stick-on grips for the Glock 43X and 48, same day, same method:
| Grip | Price | Returns |
|---|---|---|
| TALON Grips (rubber, granulate or PRO texture) | $24.99 to $29.99 | 30-day money-back guarantee (terms apply), 90-day warranty |
| Handleitgrips (textured rubber or sandpaper) | $19.99 | 30-day return, replacement or exchange (conditions apply) |
| Five Point Grips Terragrip™ silicone | $29.99 | 60-day money back, installed or not |
So the money comparison is roughly $20 to $30 against $125 to $350, before shipping. A stick-on kit goes on at your kitchen table and the gun never leaves your hands. Ours takes about ten minutes, with a 24-hour wait for the full bond.
We could not find a published, controlled test of stippling against grip tape, and we have not run one. What can be said plainly:
One honest limit: if your main problem is wet or sweaty hands, an aggressive mechanical texture such as coarse stippling or granulate is what shooters usually reach for. We make no wet-performance claim for silicone.
A carry gun spends far more time against your side than in your hand. Anything sharp enough to dig into your palm can also rub skin and wear on the inside of a cover garment. That applies to coarse stippling and to granulate tape alike. TALON says its granulate texture "may be uncomfortable during concealed carry" (TALON FAQ, read October 2026).
The difference is what you can do about it. Tape that turns out too rough comes off, and you try a rubber or silicone surface next. A stipple job that turns out too rough stays in the frame.
This is the case silicone was built for. Terragrip™ has no grit on its surface, so nothing abrasive sits against your shirt or your skin, and at 0.5 mm it adds very little to the grip. Most Kydex holsters retain on the trigger guard, so holster fit is usually unchanged. The reasoning behind the material is on our Terragrip™ page.
Stippling wins this one outright. The texture is part of the frame and lasts as long as the frame does.
Stick-on grips are wear items. TALON guarantees its grips for 90 days and says they can last years when installed correctly (TALON FAQ, read October 2026). We do not publish a lifespan figure for Terragrip™, because we have not measured one we would stand behind. What we offer is 60 days to carry it, shoot with it and send it back for a refund, installed or not. When any stick-on grip wears out, you peel it and fit a new one.
We have not measured resale prices and we could not find a published dataset, so here is what is on record.
On warranty, Glock is explicit. Its limited warranty lists, among the conditions that void coverage, that the pistol "or any of its parts are altered or modified from their original state" (Glock US warranty page, read October 2026). Melting texture into the frame is an alteration. Check your own manufacturer's terms before you send a frame out.
On resale, opinions split. Pew Pew Tactical's founder wrote that the resale value of a stippled gun will "plummet" and that you will probably lose the warranty (To Stipple or Not to Stipple?, updated April 2021). In a 2014 MiGunOwners forum thread on this exact question, one member said a stippled gun has little resale value to a typical buyer, and another argued that good work from a reputable shop is not hard to sell. Both can be true. A stock frame suits every buyer. A stippled frame suits the buyers who like that pattern.
A stick-on grip sidesteps the question. Terragrip™ peels off by hand and leaves no residue, so the frame goes back to factory condition before you sell or trade the gun. Other tapes come off too. TALON notes that any adhesive left on the frame wipes away with rubbing alcohol.
Stippling: no. The only fix for a job you regret is more work on the same frame.
Stick-on grips: yes, in a minute or two. That is why the forum thread above and the Pew Pew Tactical article land on the same order of operations: try the reversible option first.
Stipple the frame if:
Use a stick-on grip if:
When something other than ours is the better buy. If you want the most aggressive texture short of stippling, buy a granulate tape. If price matters most, Handleitgrips listed its Glock 43X and 48 kit at $19.99 when we checked. If your gun is not on our list, TALON covers far more makes and models than we do. We cut for Glock and micro-compact carry pistols, and Find Your Fit shows which. If it has come down to TALON or silicone, the two are side by side, with the case for each, on Looking For An Alternative To TALON Grips?
If you carry a Glock 43X or 48 and want traction with nothing abrasive against your side, that is what our Glock 43X and 48 grip kit is for. The Glock 43 kit is separate because the frame is different, and the rest are in the Glock grips collection.

At the five shops we checked on October 10, 2026, published prices ran from $125 for basic side panels to $350 for a full package, before shipping. Stated turnaround ran from 3 business days to 4 weeks.
On a Glock it can. Glock's limited warranty lists alteration or modification from the original state among the conditions that void coverage. Other makers have their own terms, so read yours.
Yes. Peel the grip off and the frame is as it left the factory. The reverse is not true.
Usually not. Terragrip™ adds 0.5 mm per side, and TALON describes its grips as less than 0.5 mm thick. Most Kydex holsters retain on the trigger guard, not the grip. A holster molded very tightly to the bare frame may feel firmer at first.
It depends on the product. TALON says any adhesive that remains can be removed with rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth. Terragrip™ is made to peel off by hand without residue.
It is the cheapest route, at roughly $66 for a kit, and the riskiest. Practice on spare magazine floorplates or other scrap polymer first, and accept that a mistake on the frame is permanent.
Terragrip™ silicone grip kits are $29.99, install in about ten minutes with the included alcohol prep pad, and carry a 60-day money-back guarantee, installed or not. Start with the Glock 43X and 48 grips, or see the steps in the installation guide.

In almost every case, yes. A stick-on grip adds about 0.5 mm per side and a Kydex holster retains on the trigger guard, not the grip. Here is where a grip can touch a holster, the arithmetic, and a two-minute check for your own rig.
